1: Self driving from Singapore to Malacca

For friends who owns a car, this is the best way to get to Malacca from Singapore. You are in full control of your time to travel, your pace of travel, and of course, stop at any places along the way for breaks or meals all at your own choice. You will not need to alight from your vehicle when clearing customs and immigration at the checkpoints. You can also save the trouble of lugging your luggage or baggage off your vehicle for customs and immigration clearance at Tuas Checkpoint or Woodlands Checkpoint.

From Singapore To Melaka, the fastest way will be to take the North-South Expressway (NSE). A total distance of nearly 250Km (including from Singapore to Johor Bahru across the causeway). The journey takes around 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours. This timing excludes the time spent while waiting for customs and immigration clearance at the Singapore and Malaysia causeway.

Advice: Avoid travelling to Malaysia from Singapore during peak hours. Heavy traffic is expected in the morning peak hours from 7:00am to 9:00am towards Singapore and in the evening after 5:00pm towards Johor Bahru daily. Things to prepare before you drive from Singapore To Malacca (Tips from the experts!)

  • Have Malaysian currency (RM) ready before your travel
  • Singapore-registered motor vehicles,please ensure you carry a printout of your vehicle’s road tax validity and insurance certificate in vehicles.
  • If you are departing from Singapore in a Singapore-registered motor vehicle, the vehicle’s fuel tank must be at least three-quarter tank full! Otherwise you may be liable for fines up to SGD$500. The driver will be made to turn back to Singapore to top up the vehicle’s fuel supply tank to at least three-quarter full before the vehicle is allowed to leave Singapore.
  • Make sure you have CEPAS card issued by Transitlink , AutoPass , NETSand Also ensure there is sufficient balance in the card. This is because you will need to pay toll charges at Woodlands Checkpoint or Tuas Checkpoint.
  • You need a highway toll card “Touch’n’Go” to pay the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) which costs If you do not have a Touch’n’Go card. You can go to lane 9 or 10 at the Malaysian Customs to purchase one. Ensure you top up the Touch’n’Go card to have sufficient balance. This is to prepare for usage to pay toll fees in Malaysia. Nowadays, most of the parking facilities in Malaysia can be paid using Touch’n’Go too.
  • The speed limit on the highway is 110km/hr. Please take note of Speed Trap Camera Locations (AES) on your way from Singapore to Malacca, you will pass through 3 AES (E2 1km)(E2 151KM), and (E2 180Km). from Malacca to Singapore, the AES are at (E2 180Km), (E2 147KM) and (E2 1km). There are also times where the Traffic Police will hide under overhead bridges to catch you in the act with their cameras and speed detectors. Keep your eyes on the road and drive safely. Do not speed!
  • With mobile phones being so powerful these days, you do not really need a GPS. You can download a navigation system/map on your mobile phone and have it with you during the trip because the streets in Malacca can be quite confusing. There are a lot one way roads in Malacca. Traffic conditions in Malacca is also no the fantastic, expect traffic jams most of the time.

2: Taking a bus /coach from Singapore to Malacca

This is the option you should go for if you are not in a rush and travelling on a budget.

The cheapest transport option available from Singapore to Malacca, the journey from Singapore to Malacca by bus takes an average travelling time of 4 to 5 hours depending on the traffic conditions and the wait at Singapore & Malaysia customs and immigration clearing.

Before you decide to take a Bus to Malacca, these are the things you need to take note of:

  • You will need to alight from the bus for customs and immigration clearance at the checkpoints in Singapore.
  • After clearance. You will have to go back to the bus and wait for all passengers on the same bus to clear customs and immigration, visit the toilet, etc. There are times where some passengers encounter issues at the customs and immigration clearance or have problem with their v All the other passengers in the bus will then have to wait for them.
  • Once across the causeway, you have to get off the bus again for clearance at Malaysia customs and immigration. The slight difference and additional things to do would be that you have to bring along all your belongings (baggage, luggage, etc) for clearance.
  • After clearing,you will have to go back to the bus and wait for all passengers to be back on board again.

It is definitely a very tiring and irksome option. Time that could have been spent on your holiday is also wasted. The average time spent in Singapore and Malaysia borders for customs and immigration clearance on both sides is around 1 to 2 hours. (This is of course not during long weekends or peak periods!)

4: Train From Singapore to Malacca

We consider this the worst option and would highly suggest that you not choose this. This is because there are no direct trains to Malacca from Singapore. You will first have to get to Johor Bahru (JB) Sentral before heading over to the train station in Johor Bahru Sentral and hope onto a train to Malacca. But………… If taking the train is really your choice of transport:

  1. Purchase a ticket and check the schedule before you travel. Find out more at KTM website (www.ktmb.com.my)
  2. You have to travel to Tampin railway station (also known as Pulau Sebang station)
  3. Decide between taking a train from Woodlands or Jb Sentral
  4. Depart from JB Sentral: 10:00am or 10:50pm
  5. Arrive at Tampin, Malacca: 3:10pm or 3:46am(Be prepared to arrive late as it is a common occurrence!)
  6. Tickets costRM25(adult), RM17 (child)
  7. Once you arrive at Tampin,catch a local bus or taxi to Malacca which is around 38 kilometers away.
  8. If you are taking a bus from Tampin to Malacca, be prepared that it will take more time as it is a passenger service bus that will stop at any location whenever a passenger press the bell to alight from the bus.
  • Taxi from Tampin to Malacca costs around RM60 and takes around 45 minutes.

The total amount of time spent traveling from Singapore to Malacca will take around 9 to 10 hours (Provided no delays to train departure timings and long waits at customs and immigration clearance!).
