The Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia runs from 30 October to 1 November 2026 at Sepang International Circuit. The 2025 edition drew 190,977 fans across the weekend, the highest attendance the Malaysian round has recorded.

A large share of those fans cross from Singapore. Most of them plan the trip as if Sepang sits in Kuala Lumpur. It does not, and that assumption costs them hours.

How far Sepang Circuit is from Singapore

Sepang International Circuit sits around 320 km from Singapore by road, south of Kuala Lumpur and close to KLIA. Driving takes three and a half to four hours on the North-South Expressway once you clear the checkpoint.

Look at the map before you book anything. Sepang lies between Singapore and KL, not beyond it. A route that sends you into KL Sentral first carries you past the circuit, then asks you to double back.

Why Singapore fans can skip Kuala Lumpur for MotoGP

Most MotoGP travel guides are written for fans who fly into KLIA or stay in the city. The advice they give, take the KLIA Transit from KL Sentral to Salak Tinggi, makes sense from KL. From Singapore it adds a northbound leg you never needed.

Driving from Singapore, you leave the North-South Expressway near Nilai and head west to the circuit. You stay south of the city the whole way, and you avoid KL's Friday evening traffic entirely.

Base yourself near the circuit rather than in the city and the weekend gets simpler again. More on where to stay below.

Flying vs driving from Singapore to MotoGP Malaysia

Both work. The right answer depends on group size, luggage and how you feel about airports.

Flying from Changi to KLIA for MotoGP

The flight takes about an hour, and Sepang sits around 15 minutes from KLIA. For a solo fan or a couple travelling light, flying competes well.

Count the full door to door time before you decide. Getting to Changi, checking in, security, boarding, the flight, immigration at KLIA and the transfer to your hotel add up to four hours or more. Race weekend fares climb, and Sunday evening flights home fill fast.

Driving from Singapore to Sepang

Door to door runs close to the flight once airport time is counted, with no baggage limits and no boarding window. For groups of four or more, one vehicle split across the group costs less per head than four return air fares at race weekend prices.

You also keep the car. Getting from your hotel to the circuit, and back out after the race, is where fans lose the most time. Having your own driver removes that problem.

Taking the train from Singapore to Sepang

Possible, and slow. The Shuttle Tebrau takes you from Woodlands to JB Sentral. The ETS then runs JB Sentral to KL Sentral in about four hours and ten minutes on Platinum services. From KL Sentral you take the KLIA Transit south to Salak Tinggi, then a shuttle or taxi to the circuit.

That is four separate legs and a trip north past Sepang before you turn back. Rail suits fans who want to spend a few days in KL anyway. For a race-focused weekend it is the hardest option. Our guide to the five ways to get from Singapore to Johor Bahru covers the first leg in detail.

Which checkpoint to use for Sepang Circuit

Cross at Tuas Second Link. The Second Link joins the North-South Expressway without sending you through Johor Bahru city traffic, and it carries lighter traffic than the Causeway on most days.

Woodlands works if your pickup sits in the north of Singapore and the Causeway runs clear that morning. Your driver makes that call on the day based on live conditions. Our Causeway jam guide lists the traffic sources worth checking the night before.

Best time to leave Singapore for MotoGP race weekend

Leave on Friday morning, or Thursday night if you want Friday practice.

Friday afternoon is the worst window to cross. Weekend traffic into Malaysia builds from lunchtime, and a Friday 4:00 PM departure can spend longer at Tuas than on the expressway. A Friday 7:00 AM departure puts you near Sepang by late morning with the rest of the day free.

Planning Saturday qualifying and Sunday's race only? Leaving Saturday at dawn works, though you will arrive into a busier circuit approach.

Sunday morning departures from Singapore are a poor bet. You would need to leave before 5:00 AM to reach Sepang ahead of the race day approach traffic, and you would arrive tired for a long afternoon in the heat.

Where to stay near Sepang Circuit for MotoGP

Stay close to the circuit, not in Kuala Lumpur. Sepang town, Salak Tinggi, the KLIA hotel cluster, Putrajaya and Nilai all sit within 30 minutes of the gates on a normal day.

Hotels closest to the circuit fill weeks ahead of the race. Putrajaya and Nilai hold rooms longer and still keep your race day drive short.

A KL city hotel means an hour's drive each way in race traffic, twice a day. Singapore fans have no reason to take that on.

Getting back to Singapore after the MotoGP race

The race ends on Sunday afternoon. Close to 200,000 people leave the circuit inside the same hour, then a large share of the Singapore contingent heads south on the same expressway toward the same two checkpoints.

Sunday night crossings into Singapore run heavy after any Malaysian long weekend, and race weekend adds to it. You have two workable options.

Stay Sunday night and leave Monday late morning. You skip the circuit exit crush, sleep, and cross after the Monday morning commuter peak clears. This suits anyone who can take Monday off.

Leave Sunday evening after the exit traffic thins. Wait an hour or two after the chequered flag, eat near the circuit, then drive south. You reach the checkpoint late at night, when the Sunday return queue has started to ease.

The option to avoid is leaving the moment the race ends. You queue at the circuit, queue on the expressway, then queue at Tuas.

No. The RTS Link is not expected to carry passengers until January 2027, and it runs between Woodlands North and Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru, far from Sepang.
